When and where to cruise in 2018?

24/10/2017

So your must-visit list is getting longer and you’re looking to tick off several destinations in 2018; what better than a cruise to see more of the world in one holiday?

Cruising takes the guess work out of budgeting for your holiday as they usually include meals, entertainment, accommodation and some companies even include on-board credit to spend.

The rise in popularity of cruise holidays has seen the introduction of new, bigger, modern ships and a variety of routes to choose from, this week we look at where to cruise and when is the best time to set sail.

January to March

The Caribbean and Mexico

There’s probably not a bad time to visit this beautiful part of the world, but cruising around the Caribbean early in the year means you’re guaranteed sunshine (weather is generally mild). We’d recommend avoiding the crowds that descend on the islands during American Spring Break which falls early March.

You can expect crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches, and Havana in Cuba is a must on your itinerary if you’re looking to add a mix of culture and history to your cruise.

Central and South America

At this time of year the humidity will be low and you will be able to explore comfortably, especially for areas where you’re likely to do a lot of walking, such as visits to two of the modern wonders of the world; Machu Picchu in Peru and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.

Southeast Asia

This area of the globe is beautiful and is best explored in the less sticky months earlier in the year. This is the go to place for exotic landscapes, history and culture and not to forget cosmopolitan cities including Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore.

April to June

Holland

For a break a little closer to home why not take a mini cruise to Amsterdam to seek out the artistic heritage and modern art that sets the city apart, or explore more of the Netherlands where the tulips come into bloom in the springtime.

The Mediterranean and Greek Islands

Visit some of the best places that Europe has to offer all in one trip with the dramatic architecture of Barcelona, the museums and galleries of Marseilles and the spectacular scenery along the Amalfi coast.

The Greek islands are popular for romantics and history lovers alike. Enjoy the sunset in Santorini, stand atop the Acropolis or explore the gateway to Olympia.

July to September

Northern Europe and Iceland

For a cooler summer break consider a cruise around Northern Europe and Iceland with temperatures coming in at 15 degrees Celsius at this time of year. The nights are bright at this time of the year meaning you could catch a glimpse of the midnight sun.

October to December

The South Pacific and Hawaii

If you prefer to travel later in the year then we’d recommend cruising in the South Pacific and Hawaii.

This area is the ultimate paradise with an array of tranquil beaches. Why not try a spot of snorkelling in the turquoise waters and take in the breath-taking views of the coral reef.

Notable ports of call are Bora Bora for its unmatched beauty (known as the jewel of the South Seas) and at the final stop you will see volcanoes erupting into the ocean at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Rhine and Danube Rivers

If a River Cruise is more your style then chances are you’ve looked at the Rhine River (from Basel to Amsterdam, passing primarily through Germany, or the Danube River between Budapest and Passau, Germany, that runs primarily through Austria.

Both routes offer some of Europe’s most splendid views and are packed with medieval castles, scenic gorges and quaint towns.

Antarctica

The only time that you can travel to the White Continent is from November until February. The average temperature is -49 degrees Celsius so don’t forget to you pack your thermals! It’s a great opportunity to spot wildlife including cute penguins and whales, which you can see performing spectacular breaches from December.
