Short Break Ideas for a Spring Staycation
26/04/2017
The humble staycation has grown in popularity in recent years; with a 6% rise in Britons taking a UK based weekend break last year, compared to 2015. This has been recognised by the government, who have launched an action plan to encourage UK tourism, including support for B&Bs across the nation. With that in mind, we present some short break ideas so you can enjoy the spring weather...
The Cornish Coast
Cornwall is an incredibly popular destination among UK holidaymakers, and while it can be enjoyed as a week or even two-week long summer holiday destination, it can make an excellent spring weekend break. Cornish towns such as St Ives can be tremendously busy during the summer months, yet wonderfully peaceful in spring. Enjoy the spectacular coastline in relatively quiet surroundings during the months of April and May, with average temperatures of 11o C – perfect for a bank holiday trip!
The Lake District
With breath-taking views of lake, forest and mountain-filled landscapes, the Lake District is the ultimate short break getaway. It’s perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and water sports and it also makes for a delightful romantic retreat. The Cumbrian national park is full of charm, with plenty of quaint hotels and bed and breakfasts to choose from – or why not book a self-catering cottage? - and it truly comes alive during springtime. Book your space on an organised walking tour, ride your bike through the mountains or follow in the footsteps of Beatrix Potter; there are heaps of possibilities for your weekend away.
Stratford-upon-Avon
For those looking to immerse themselves in English cultural heritage for a few days, a trip to Shakespeare’s birthplace is in order. Stratford-upon-Avon is a unique market town brimming with nature and history and is perfect for a short break. Spend your weekend exploring the diverse range of shops, enjoying the Tudor buildings and, of course, experiencing the rich Shakespearean history by visiting one of the three Royal Shakespeare Company theatres in the town. And with Shakespeare’s birthday on the 26th April, what better time to visit than during the spring?
Edinburgh
Scotland’s capital is a magnificent city break destination. A blend of historic and modern culture, you will find plenty of varied activities to fill your weekend. A visit to the castle is a must for any visitor, whilst the Royal Botanic Garden is the perfect location for a leisurely spring walk. May is an excellent time to visit Edinburgh due to the warming weather and blooming flowers which add another level of vibrancy to this medieval city.
Cambridge
Cambridge is a truly spectacular place to visit, particularly during the spring when you can take a walk along the River Cam, or even take a relaxing punting tour along it. The city is brimming with breathtaking architecture, including the world-famous college buildings which make up part of the Cambridge University campus, and is a popular weekend destination.
Brighton
The quirky seaside destination of Brighton is a perfect idea for a short break. Its pebbly beaches, amusement arcades and market-clad streets are quintessentially English, yet it has a thriving music scene and lively nightlife, resulting in a wonderfully eclectic culture. It is a wildly popular staycation destination and should definitely be on your list this spring. With the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival in April, what are you waiting for?!
