Luxurious Train Rides to Travel in Style and Comfort
20/03/2017
Imagine travelling through magnificent scenery, enjoying gourmet food and drink in the most luxury surroundings, visiting multiple destinations and experiencing new cultures day by day, whilst relaxing in the same luxury accommodation each night. We have selected three of the most luxurious train rides in the UK, Europe and further afield for holiday memories to treasure for a lifetime.
UK: Royal Scotsman
Belmond’s Royal Scotsman whisks you through the Scottish Highlands, with stops at ancient castles, spectacular gardens and natural wonders as you travel in traditional Scottish style. With a variety of train journeys offering unique activities, you could experience the thrills of clay pigeon shooting, the delight of touring a whiskey distillery or the serene of Scotland’s finest golf courses.
Cabins
All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with constant access to hot water, a dressing table, full length wardrobe and lower bed. Fitted with decorative wood carvings and traditional Scottish-inspired soft furnishings, you are ensured the height of luxury.
Dining
With mahogany-panelled Dining Cars and alternate formal and informal dining nights, this train ride offers unique luxury dining experiences. The menu includes regional specialties; enjoy warm pigeon salad, Aberdeen Angus beef or wild salmon as you pass through the stunning scenery.
The Royal Scotsman provides nightly entertainment in a country-house atmosphere. With only 40 guests at a time, every ride on this train is an authentic, intimate and delightful journey.
Europe: Danube Express
The Danube Express, operated by Golden Eagle, takes various routes across Europe - including journeys from Venice, through Prague, Berlin and Krakow, to Budapest, and from Istanbul, via Thessaloniki, Sofia and Belgrade, also to Budapest. Off-train excursions are combined with luxurious accommodation cabins and restaurant carts so you can take in maximum continental culture, then relax in the most comfortable surroundings.
Cabins
The carriages are divided into two classes on board the Danube Express. Gold Class (also known as Deluxe) cars hold five en-suite cabins and Silver Class (Heritage) carriages have eight sleeping cabins with a shared toilet at one end and shower at the other. All cabins are comprised of daytime seating which is elegantly transformed into a sleeping area whilst you are at dinner. The décor is reminiscent of times gone by; quaint and stylish, with large windows to enjoy the views.
Dining
With a capacity of 56 passengers, all meals on this train are served in a single sitting in a plush, comfortable yet informal atmosphere. With efficient waiters serving sumptuous dishes, prepared with local and seasonal ingredients, you are sure to be indulged in continental luxury.
The Danube Express has a Bar Lounge Car for you to unwind, meet your fellow passengers and enjoy a range of entertainment and activities. You could learn a new language, learn about the local history and culture or just relax to the sounds of the resident pianist.
Further Afield: Rocky Mountaineer
The Rocky Mountaineer is a spectacular train providing unparalleled views of the Canadian Rockies and unforgettable experiences of Western Canada and North America. As one of the most luxurious train rides around, its carriages rival that of a first-class aeroplane cabin.
Cabins
There are no sleeping cabins on board this train. Instead, you are transported through the breath-taking landscapes by day, staying at new luxurious hotels in truly picturesque destinations each night. Your luggage is transferred to and from the train so you can relax knowing it is all taken care of.
Dining
The on-board kitchen is run by award winning chefs from Michelin-star backgrounds, serving a range of delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. Experience Canadian inspired, locally sourced cuisine such as Montreal style smoked beef, Fraser Valley eggs or maple cream, accompanied with British Columbian wines, as you travel hundreds of miles per day in style and comfort.
What is simply magical about the Rocky Mountaineer are the glass domed cars offering panoramic views of the remarkable landscapes. You can also experience the fresh mountain air in one of the open foyers of the GoldLeaf class carriages, making for an incredible trip.
