An insider's guide to single trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance

07/08/2017

Do you find that you’re traveling more frequently these days?

Good news, you’re not alone! New research suggests the UK’s older generations have overtaken the country’s youngsters as the great travellers of today, making up around 60% of travel and tourism spend, and more holidays generally means more happiness, so we’re all for it!

The freedom, finances and flexibility to travel more always throws up the same question here at Just Travel Cover HQ.

What is the difference between single and annual multi-trip travel insurance, and which one is best for me?”

In this week’s travel blog, we aim to help you understand the benefits of each type of cover to help you make the best decision.

What is single trip travel insurance?

A single trip travel insurance policy will cover you for a one-off holiday.

Cover will start from the time that you purchase your policy in respect cancellation.

The policy will also cover you for the time that you are on holiday in relation to:

  • Medical expenses
  • Repatriation expenses
  • Baggage cover
  • Cash and Money
  • Loss of travel documents
  • Personal liability
  • Legal expenses

What is annual multi-trip travel insurance?

If you know you’re going to take more than one holiday over a 12-month period (which sounds lovely to us!) then buying an annual multi-trip policy could save you some money.

An annual policy will cover you for all of your trips during the insurance period for cancellation, as well as medical cover, baggage and more whilst travelling.

Trips within the UK will also be covered as standard.

Your travel plans, age, pre-existing medical conditions and individual requirements are all things that may impact which type of policy which is best for you but we’ve highlighted some benefits of single trip and multi trip cover below:

3 Reasons to buy single trip travel insurance

  • Cost effective if you only plan on travelling once or twice a year – You only buy single trip cover as and when you need it so this type of one-off cover is generally cheaper than an annual policy.
  • Your price will be based on the destination or destinations that you’re planning to visit which can also help keep the costs down, rather than basing the policy on an area.
  • Great for long-stay. Can cover trips up to 365 days duration, particularly good if you’re planning a long trip.

3 Reasons to buy annual travel insurance

  • Great if you plan on travelling on more than on trip in a 12-month period – provides flexibility to suit your travel plans and removes the need to arrange a policy each time you book a holiday.
  • Covers each person on the policy for independent trips, good for those who travel with their loved ones but also want cover for getaways with friends.
  • You can upgrade your cover during the period of insurance if your requirements change, whether you need higher levels of cancellation cover, changes to the destination area, additional cruise cover, etc.

  3 Travel insurance top tips

  • If you are travelling to Europe three times and the USA once in a 12 month period it will be cheaper to arrange an annual European policy and take out a separate single trip insurance policy for the USA trip (rather than taking an annual worldwide policy.)
  • Purchase your travel insurance as soon as possible after arranging your holiday, this will cover you in the event that anything unplanned happens and you need to cancel your trip.
  • The levels of cover you benefit from on Just Travel Cover’s annual and single trip travel insurance policies are the same. Just Travel Cover’s Unity Gold policy will have the same level of cover on a single or annual multi-trip basis.
