5 last-minute summer holiday ideas

23/08/2017

For many the August Bank Holiday is the last chance to get away for a short break, so whether you’re exploring the UK on a staycation, hopping on a flight to Europe or simply digging out the BBQ, be sure you make the most of it as British summer time draws to a close.

But why let the fun end there?

We’ve put together some great ideas for a last-minute break to help you beat the end of summer blues.

In this week’s travel blog we look at our top 5 last minute getaways for the end of summer:

1. Greek Islands

If you like beautiful scenery and the heat, then you’ll love the Greek islands where the average temperatures for the latter part of the summer are often in the high-twenties. With over 6,000 islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian seas (only 227 are inhabited) there are many islands to choose from; Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Kos and more. No matter which of the Greek islands you do decide to visit, you will have a great time taking in the picturesque views.

2. Cyprus

The island of Cyprus has something to satisfy every traveller. Beautiful beaches, historic ruins, idyllic villages and authentic local cuisine mean there’s always something on the menu. The furthermost location on our list with a flight time of around 4 hours 30 minutes from the UK, but from what we about hear about Cyprus, it’s worth it!

3. Spain

A firm favourite amongst the Brits and we know why. Spain is very accessible from the UK and with so many different holiday options and with the great weather it’s easy to see why over 17 million of us visited the country in 2016. Like so many of the choices in our list there really is something to please every type of traveller from city breaks in the capital to beach holidays on the coast, “una cerveza por favor.”

4. The Canaries

Located off the coast of north-west Africa, the canaries are best known for their black and white sandy beaches. The main volcanic islands are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma, however La Gomera and El Hierro are two of the islands that are not usually in the spotlight. The temperatures in the canaries are a manageable at this time of year and come in around the mid-twenties which makes the islands a perfect location for a relaxing getaway.

5. Mediterranean cruise

Why limit yourself to one country? A cruise around the med will bring you the best of the above and more. Visit a handful of European gems whilst also enjoying the luxury of sailing on a 1,000ft cruise ship with full waiter service, “another cocktail please.”
